(En castellano al final)In case you're a bit lost when it comes to emerging bands—that is, bands that aren't the typical ones with T-shirts at H&M—let me introduce you to an absolute powerhouse: THE VOLCANICS. This is an Australian rock 'n' roll band formed in 2003, known for their high-energy live performances and raw, direct sound. By way of introduction, let’s mention that throughout their career, they’ve shared the stage with legendary groups such as THE HELLACOPTERS, MUDHONEY, and RADIO BIRDMAN.

After six years without setting foot on our continent, they’re returning in February 2025 to present their sixth studio album, Volatile World, with a tour spanning 11 Spanish cities. Let's see what these ‘machines’ of ‘Ruock En Ruoll’ have to say.

Hey guys! After six years without touring Europe, what motivated you to come back now and choose Spain as your main destination?

We were last in Europe in October 2019, just before covid hit and the whole world shut down for a few years. So, we were lucky in a way with the timing as living in Western Australia it was very difficult for us to travel anywhere for about three years. We’ve been eager to get back to Spain as soon as we had a new album to tour with as we love coming Spain and seeing our fans and friends we have made over the years. The Spanish seem to have a real passion for rocknroll!

Volatile World is your sixth album. How has your sound evolved on this record compared to previous ones?

We feel like each album we release is better than the last and Volatile World is no different. We’ve been playing our music and playing together for a long time now so we feel like we have a strong rapport when it comes to writing songs together as well as recording so hopefully that comes through on the album.

Your live energy is highly praised by both critics and fans. What can we expect from this new tour?

People coming to our shows can expect to see a high energy rocknroll show from start to finish. Loud, crunchy guitars, thumping bass, pounding drums and vocals you can sing along to. We also have a couple of ballads that we have put into the set recently to mix things up a little bit as well. If people want to be able let loose, have a lot of fun and get moving then they should definitely make it down to one of our shows.

You’ve shared the stage with iconic bands. What key lessons or experiences do you take away from those collaborations?

We’ve learned a lot from playing alongside some great, legendary bands over the years. It’s hard to put into words but we just feel very lucky to have played with these bands. Through supporting Radio Birdman a few times over the years we became friends with Rob Younger and have been lucky enough to have him produce three of our albums. Rob is an absolute legend and a top bloke and we definitely learned a lot from him through having him produce those albums.

How does being from Australia influence your music and the way you connect with European audiences?

We definitely feel like our music has been influenced by a lot of great Aussie bands from the 70s and 80s, along with many other bands, and we like to think that our sound is Australian rocknroll. I’m not sure how that affects the way we connect with fans in Europe but we have found that there are many people in Europe that are very passionate about Australian rocknroll and we feel very privileged to be able to come and play our music to European audiences.

After more than two decades in the music scene, what challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

We have faced many challenges over the years and probably the biggest challenge has been just to keep the band going for all this time. Probably the way we have managed to do this has been to consistently write new songs and do new recordings so we are able to consistently release new material. There are many other challenges for musicians in this new world and it seems like it is getting harder and harder for musicians to be paid appropriately for their music due to platforms like spotify.

You’ve probably heard the phrase Spain is different. Can you share a memorable anecdote from your previous tours in Spain?

It does seem Spain is a little different to the rest of Europe but we see this as a positive thing as the people are so friendly and passionate. Probably the most memorable anecdote was during our tour in 2017 when on a night out following a show our drummer Alex badly injured his ankle (we still had two weeks of the tour left!). However, even with a badly injured ankle, Alex strapped it up and took painkillers every night and we still played every show on the tour!! Legendary effort.

Which song from Volatile World would you recommend to someone listening to you for the first time? Let’s get new listeners excited about attending your Spanish shows!

Probably the best song to give people an idea of what a Volcanics show will be like is the first track – Saturday Night. It’s a typical Volcanics high energy rocknroll song.

How was the experience of working with Jozef Grech on the production of this album?

It was great working with Jozef. He’s an amazing musician and sound engineer and has great ideas for songs. He’s also a great friend of ours plays guitar in Datura4 who tour Europe regularly.

Looking ahead, what goals or projects do you have in mind for THE VOLCANICS?

We’ve already written most of the songs for the new album so we are going to be recording the first single from the new album around Easter time this year with an aim to release that track later in the year. We are then planning to record the album later in the year and hopefully release it early 2026.

Se trata de una banda australiana de rock 'n' roll formada en 2003, conocida por sus directos llenos de energía y su sonido crudo y directo. A modo de introducción, mencionaremos que a lo largo de su carrera han compartido escenario con grupos míticos como THE HELLACOPTERS, MUDHONEY o RADIO BIRDMAN.

Tras seis años sin pisar nuestro continente, vuelven en febrero de 2025 para presentar su sexto álbum de estudio, Volatile World, con una gira que recorrerá 11 ciudades españolas. Veamos qué tienen que decirnos estas 'máquinas' de 'Ruock En Ruoll'.

¡Hola, chicos! Después de seis años sin hacer giras por Europa, ¿qué os motivó a volver ahora y elegir España como vuestro principal destino?

La última vez que estuvimos en Europa fue en octubre de 2019, justo antes de que llegara el covid y el mundo entero se cerrara durante unos años. Así que, en cierto modo, tuvimos suerte con el momento, ya que al vivir en Australia Occidental nos resultó muy difícil viajar a cualquier parte durante unos tres años. Estábamos ansiosos por volver a España tan pronto como tuviéramos un nuevo álbum con el que hacer una gira, ya que nos encanta venir a España y ver a nuestros fans y amigos que hemos hecho a lo largo de los años. ¡Los españoles parecen tener una verdadera pasión por el rock and roll!

Volatile World es vuestro sexto álbum. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado vuestro sonido en este disco en comparación con los anteriores?

Sentimos que cada álbum que lanzamos es mejor que el anterior y Volatile World no es diferente. Hemos estado tocando nuestra música y tocando juntos durante mucho tiempo, así que sentimos que tenemos una fuerte relación cuando se trata de escribir canciones juntos, así como de grabar, así que esperamos que eso se refleje en el álbum.

Tu energía en vivo es muy elogiada tanto por los críticos como por los fans. ¿Qué podemos esperar de esta nueva gira?

La gente que venga a nuestros shows puede esperar ver un show de rock and roll lleno de energía de principio a fin. Guitarras fuertes y crujientes, bajos contundentes, tambores potentes y voces que puedes cantar. También tenemos un par de baladas que hemos incluido en el set recientemente para mezclar un poco las cosas también. Si la gente quiere poder soltarse, divertirse mucho y moverse, definitivamente deberían venir a uno de nuestros shows.

Has compartido el escenario con bandas icónicas. ¿Qué lecciones o experiencias clave te llevas de esas colaboraciones?

Hemos aprendido mucho al tocar junto a algunas bandas legendarias y geniales a lo largo de los años. Es difícil expresarlo con palabras, pero nos sentimos muy afortunados de haber tocado con estas bandas. Al apoyar a Radio Birdman varias veces a lo largo de los años, nos hicimos amigos de Rob Younger y tuvimos la suerte de que produjera tres de nuestros álbumes. Rob es una leyenda absoluta y un tipo genial y definitivamente aprendimos mucho de él al tenerlo produciendo esos álbumes.

¿Cómo influye el hecho de ser de Australia en tu música y en la forma en que conectas con el público europeo?

Definitivamente sentimos que nuestra música ha sido influenciada por muchas grandes bandas australianas de los años 70 y 80, junto con muchas otras bandas, y nos gusta pensar que nuestro sonido es rock and roll australiano. No estoy seguro de cómo eso afecta la forma en que conectamos con los fans en Europa, pero hemos descubierto que hay muchas personas en Europa que son muy apasionadas por el rock and roll australiano y nos sentimos muy privilegiados de poder venir y tocar nuestra música para el público europeo.

Después de más de dos décadas en la escena musical, ¿a qué desafíos se han enfrentado y cómo los han superado?

Hemos enfrentado muchos desafíos a lo largo de los años y probablemente el mayor desafío ha sido simplemente mantener la banda en marcha durante todo este tiempo. Probablemente la forma en que hemos logrado hacer esto ha sido escribir constantemente nuevas canciones y hacer nuevas grabaciones para poder lanzar constantemente nuevo material. Hay muchos otros desafíos para los músicos en este nuevo mundo y parece que cada vez es más difícil para los músicos recibir un pago adecuado por su música debido a plataformas como Spotify.

Probablemente hayas escuchado la frase España es diferente. ¿Puedes compartir una anécdota memorable de tus giras anteriores en España?

Parece que España es un poco diferente al resto de Europa, pero lo vemos como algo positivo, ya que la gente es muy amable y apasionada. Probablemente la anécdota más memorable fue durante nuestra gira en 2017, cuando en una salida nocturna después de un espectáculo, nuestro baterista Alex se lesionó gravemente el tobillo (¡todavía nos quedaban dos semanas de gira!). Sin embargo, incluso con un tobillo gravemente lesionado, Alex se lo vendó y tomó analgésicos todas las noches y ¡aún así tocamos en todos los shows de la gira! Un esfuerzo legendario.

¿Qué canción de Volatile World recomendarías a alguien que te escucha por primera vez? ¡Hagamos que los nuevos oyentes se entusiasmen con asistir a tus shows en España!

Probablemente la mejor canción para dar a la gente una idea de cómo será un show de los Volcanics es la primera pista, Saturday Night. Es una canción típica de rock and roll de alta energía de los Volcanics.

¿Cómo fue la experiencia de trabajar con Jozef Grech en la producción de este álbum?

Fue genial trabajar con Jozef. Es un músico e ingeniero de sonido increíble y tiene grandes ideas para las canciones. También es un gran amigo nuestro que toca la guitarra en Datura4, quienes interpretan giras por Europa regularmente.

De cara al futuro, ¿qué objetivos o proyectos tienes en mente para THE VOLCANICS?

Ya hemos escrito la mayoría de las canciones para el nuevo álbum, así que vamos a grabar el primer sencillo del nuevo álbum alrededor de la época de Pascua de este año con el objetivo de lanzar esa canción más adelante. Tenemos previsto grabar el álbum más adelante este año y, con suerte, lanzarlo a principios de 2026.
